PRINTED FILM CATALOGUES

9.5MM PRINTED FILMS IN THE UK

In the UK the majority of 9.5mm printed film releases came from Pathéscope Ltd - the UK offshoot of Pathé-Baby / S.C.I. Pathé in France, the originators of 9.5mm, the first amateur movie film gauge; and after 1959, Pathéscope (Great Britain) Ltd - renamed after a UK buy-out.

However many other companies did release printed films in the 9.5mm format - in the UK these included:- Peak Films; A.B. Pathé; Walton Films; Wallace Heaton; Dane Films; Diamond Films; Adventure Films; LGP Cine; Paul Carnell; Novascope; and Presto Films. Plus the Empire Film Library.

These 9.5mm printed film catalogues, with extra information, are alphabetically listed below, company by company, all that I know of are included

Whilst these various UK lists started with original catalogues, monthly magazines, actual films in my collection and data for many from the unpublished " International 9.5mm Encyclopedia" film lists; I would particularly like to thank 9.5mm film historian extraordinaire - Maurice Trace, who has published extensive catalogues of UK Pathéscope 9.5mm film releases (see information on the various lists below).

9.5MM PRINTED FILMS IN FRANCE

In France it was the Pathé-Baby company (after 1950, SCI Pathé), originators of the 9.5mm movie gauge, who issued the largest number of 9.5mm films and it was only they in France who issued 9.5mm optical sound films. However after the second world war Film Office also issued a large number of 9.5mm printed films and they eventually took over the Pathé catalogue and master negatives etc. Other French 9.5mm printed films came from Cinak, Hefa, LaPierre, Pinguin and Tobis. 9.5mm film lists for all of these companies are available below. I have now added the Pathé-Baby silent film lists - and about time you say! (gln July 2017)

A large French photographic retailer Mascre, had an extensive 9.5mm sound and silent film library during the 1930s. It is a puzzle for French collectors because Mascre used different reference numbers for most of the Pathé films in their library and in fact had many extra unknown titles. These unknown titles can generally be traced to - an early Pathé notched film being assembled on larger spools with running titles; or overseas 9.5mm releases being retitled (includinng the inter-titles) in French for their film library. Even so, it is possible there may well be other titles printed by Mascre themselves. However there were only one or two prints of each film and as far as I can tell, these films were never issued for sale. Hence no attempt to catalogue them here, has been made.

Whilst these various lists started with original catalogues, actual films in my collection, and data for many from the unpublished "International 9.5mm Encyclopedia" film lists; I would particularly like to thank M. Pierre Francis Berger, who for many years from the mid. 1990s corresponded with me regarding the various French 9.5mm film releases, starting with French 9.5mm sound films. Sadly we never met, but our correspondence not only helped immensely with the French 9.5mm film releases, but it also certainly did a bit to help improve my grasp of the French language!

9.5MM PRINTED FILMS IN THE USA

Pathé had a short foray with 9.5mm into the United States of America in the 1920s. The financial slump finished things, but read more in the introduction to the listings. Find out even more at American 9.5mm enthusiast Jerry Wagner's web-pages:- www.pathex.com

9.5MM PRINTED FILMS ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD

Pathé-Baby (France) and Pathéscope (UK) issued 9.5mm silent printed films all around the world with agencies in most countries including Australia, India, South Africa, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Sweden and even Russia! Generally from the 1920s, the master material originated from Pathé-Baby in France with much the same film subjects but titled in the appropriate language. (Early 9.5mm Pathé UK releases often have quaint title translations!) Later once Pathéscope in the UK had set up their own film laboratories at Cricklewood, North London, they took over the British language prints and maybe other films for British Commonwealth countries. Films for countries like India often I believe had the titles in two languages. Most if not all Pathé-Baby worldwide 9.5mm printed films were produced in France or the UK. However Pathex in the USA soon took over their own 9.5mm printed film production. It is also possible that in Germany, Tobis (Pathé agents?) printed 9.5mm films. I recall 9.5mm film printing equipment also turning up in Spain or Portugal.

Naturally some of these other countries had some companies that also released silent 9.5mm printed films. As far as I know 9.5mm sound films were only produced in the UK and France. Currently I have no immediate plans to attempt to publish lists of these 'other countries' 9.5mm film releases, but you never know!
