9.5MM SOUND
ACE CINEMAGAZINES
by Grahame L. Newnham B.Sc.

Typical boxes - blue pre-war, the others post-war - and yes Pathéscope can't spell - 'Pot Shots' is actually 'Pot Shot'!

INTRODUCTION

These were a series of short 'support' films intended for UK cinemas. A total of eighty-nine items were made between February 1937 and September 1938.

Pathéscope released twenty-six of these on 9.5mm optical sound during the early years of World War 11. Although the cinema running times were around 10 to 11 minutes, those for release on 9.5mm sound were cut down to fit the 300 foot / 100 metre (1 reel) spool size - running around 8 minutes each. The shortening was achieved by general trimming or by omitting whole sequences. The listing below contains the original 35mm content, but sections eliminated for 9.5mm release are shown in {brackets and italics}.

We can see that these interesting little shorts may be padded out with existing stock shots but much were filmed at the Ace Studios in London. They were made by Ace Film Productions and edited by James M. Anderson. Many of the films ended with a musical or variety piece. As you can see from the list below, some 'punster' had fun composing the titles!

Maybe 9.5mm optical sound is the only place where much viewable material still exists.

Pathéscope Monthly magazine - dated Oct 1939 - yes the title is actually "Bobbin About" !
The first two Ace Cinemagazines are announced for 9.5mm sound - usually one or two were released each month
sadly this issue was just two sheets of paper stapled together - later issues were reduced to just one sheet
- then stopped all together - war paper rationing!

NOTES
 1. Each entry begins with the Pathéscope reference number.
 2. At the end of each title line is the Pathéscope 9.5mm sound release date.
     - where this is just shown as 41/43 we have no firm dates because the
Pathéscope Monthly house magazine ceased publication later during the war.
3 Items enclosed in brackets and in italics were omitted from the 9.5mm release.
 4. Click on the Pathéscope 9.5mm number to see YouTube uploads - maybe more to come.
 5. There's no 'research' credit on "Brake It Gently" - the first in the series -
oddly the first in the series was the last edition Pathéscope released on 9.5mm!
